Session 1.
Presentation Career Management in the Time of COVID (and Beyond)
Presenter: Brian J. Pillsbury, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, Assistant Director, NIU Career Services; President, Illinois Career Development Association
Dr. Pillsbury will examine career management, the intentional approach to one’s career development, through the lens of social cognitive theory of career self-management (Lent & Brown, 2013). The implications of this theory for adapting to the changes brought on by the pandemic will be explored.
Session 2.
Presentation Employment Outlook: 2020-2030
Presenter: Paul LaPorte, Regional Economist, U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
Our clients’ search for the next stage in their career development should be informed by career knowledge – not just what careers are about but their projected growth and hiring trends. Mr. LaPorte will be presenting valuable data and projections from the BLS on the future of the job market. He will address general trends as well as information on specific jobs and industries that have been affected by the economic changes brought about by the COVID pandemic.
Session 3.
Presentation Impact of COVID-19 on Postsecondary & Employment Needs of Persons with Disabilities
Presenter: Bryan Dallas, Ph.D., CRC, LCPC, Associate Professor, Rehabilitation Counseling, NIU; Certified Rehabilitation Counselor
Individuals with disabilities were significantly impacted by COVID-19 in several ways including:
Decreased socialization, increased isolation including risk of personal safety, decreased quality of life and access to healthcare, and significant changes to employment and educational endeavors. Results of a survey on the impact of COVID-19 among postsecondary students with disabilities will be presented. Additionally, considerations on the employment needs of individuals with disabilities will also be addressed.

Panelists will discuss their respective NCDA certificates, including the decision and process to
earn the certification as well as the value that the certificate has brought to their careers.

Presentation and Facilitated Discussion DEI-Informed Practices for Career Practitioners

Over the last several years, incidents of social injustice targeting members of oppressed groups have heightened awareness of the need for sensitivity to matters of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in all sectors of society. Dr. Pillsbury will explore the concept of DEI-informed practice within the career development professions and will lead a discussion on ways that career practitioners can practice with cultural competence and DEI awareness and sensitivity. Bring your ideas for a lively discussion!

Presentation The Great Resignation: What It Is and Its Implications for Career Counselors

The coronavirus shut down our nation in March 2020, and within two months, a tsunami of workers decided to quit their jobs. And this dramatic and unexpected trend has continued into 2022. Who is resigning? Why are they resigning? Where are they going? And what are the challenges and opportunities for career counselors who are ideally positioned to provide information and guidance?

The world of work is changing at an ever-increasing pace. Our clients will need to prepare for multiple career decision-making “forks in the road” over their lifetimes. Initially, ICDA created the Five Steps of Proactive Career Development to help address our purpose to promote career development to all people over the lifespan in the state of Illinois. The theme of last year’s conference was chosen to help us better understand and assist with the variety of lifework related issues facing our clients and/or students at the various stages of their lives.
SESSION 1
Presentation | Meaning and Purpose: Living Your Core Values Throughout the Lifespan.
Presenter – Jonni Lukenbill-Bowles, LPC, NCC, BCC, CLRC is a counselor, coach and owner of Sage Prairie Studio.
Jonni’s presentation will address the questions: How can we harness the power of our learning to help our clients in their career lifespan? How do we help our clients achieve their AUTHENTIC CAREER? As a result of her lifelong study of eastern philosophies, she will share a secular list of those philosophies that can help us observe our clients and understand their career wholeness beyond their resume and career history and, in turn, assist them in getting in touch with their authentic self.

Presentation | Beyond Age and Stage: Career Considerations from an Intersectional Framework
Presenter -Melissa Fickling, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Northern Illinois University.
Career practitioners may feel that historical models of career development are not comprehensive enough for meaningful career counseling today. Intersectionality is a decades-old concept that is gaining more recognition in mainstream counseling discourse. In this presentation, we will consider how our clients’ experiences with privilege and oppression can shape and be shaped by career development phenomena, and the role of the career practitioner in broaching these topics.

Presentation | Transitioning from College to Careers – A Look at Strategies, Resources and Best Practices
Viewed Through a Higher Ed Lens for Lifelong Career Success.
Presenter – Danette Schulz, MA, LPC, NCC is the Assistant Director for Academic Advising and Career Development at the Schaumburg campus of Roosevelt University.
This presentation will discuss new steps institutions are taking to integrate career readiness into the college experience with student focused initiatives aimed at helping students reflect, articulate, and translate their career readiness skills, knowledge and thinking. This will include looking at the Wise Wonderings system by Dr. Katherine Brooks and understanding Chaos Theory as a new tool when working through the transition process.

Presentation | Blossoming at Midlife – Exploring the Opportunities That Come with Wisdom and Experience
Presenter – Nick Williams is the author of the international best-selling book, The Work We Were Born To Do
Nick will remote into our conference from London, UK and present the culmination of his research on leadership. Having found inspirational leadership to be a collaborative activity, full of opportunities to work alongside others and that our most powerful leadership is derived from a commitment to serve something greater than ourselves, Nick will take us into the middle years and discuss how our clients have the potential to lead and inspire.

Session Moderator – David Barreto, MA, NCC, LPC is the co-owner of Lighthouse Professional Counseling Center and an Assistant Professor/Counselor at Waubonsee Community College.
Three best practices for addressing existential issues common to all will be shared. The presentations will be followed by a facilitated discussion among conference attendees with the objective of gathering best practices for a document to be prepared following the conference. This document will be placed on our ICDA website for the benefit of both our members and the public.
